The other issue is that it's competing in a keenly fought segment and there are rivals that offer more equipment but the Aygo offers a small car with character and reliability. There's also a lot of models available to choose from.
The styling is modern if not futuristic and aimed at attracting young buyers and it is certainly more stylish and better bolted together than the previous Aygo. The top model comes with leather upholstery, climate control and electric canvass sunroof and alloy wheels. There's also a 7-inch infotainment screen, keyless entry and privacy glass. Safety equipment includes tyre pressure monitoring, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control and four airbags.
Toyota wants its little car to stand out so it is available in a variety of bright colours and contrasting tones as well as with some special editions having a bright blue body and a contrasting black roof and door mirrors. There's just the one engine available, a three-cylinder 1.0 litre petrol unit which delivers enough power and agility to be an enjoyable drive around town. The fuel economy is around 69 mpg with emissions of 95g/km.
And while there's plenty of space for those upfront, the rear seats can feel cramped for tall adults though the Toyota Aygo offers a pleasant place to be whether driving around the mean city streets or sprinting down the motorway.
Potential owners should also be aware that the Aygo shares the same platform as the Peugeot 108 and the Citroen C1 and there are lots of mechanical similarities – though styling is very much different. The vehicles differ in the amount of personalisation options that are available and Toyota has a long list of these options but also, more importantly, tends to offer well priced special editions on a regular basis featuring lots of extra kit.
Essentially, the Toyota Aygo offers owners a car that's not just cheap to buy and run but it has a decent equipment list and can be easily customisable; it's striking looks also help it to stand out from the crowd but the cramped cabin may put some potential buyers off. Those that stick with a striking car will find the Aygo easy to live with.
